It may have been greats like Drtikol, Sudek and Koudelka who created Czech photography’s international reputation of strong individualism. But it was also the lesser-known and even forgotten photographers who helped to keep the medium alive during the country’s troubled times. Such is the theme of the most comprehensive review of 20th-century Czech photography to date. Curators Vladimír Birgus and Jan Mlčoch gathered the work of 423 artists in more than 1,200 pieces that tell not only the history of Czech photography, but also the recent history of the country and trends in the medium itself.

Spread over three venues, the work is presented chronologically and grouped by genre. The exhibition in the Museum of Decorative Arts (UPM) covers early movements such as Pictorialism and abstraction. While the oldest works are in muddy sepia, the tonal ranges widen as the technology improves. The birth of reportage comes with the first hand-held cameras, as exemplified in Bohumil Střemcha’s amusing “Prague Characters” series. But the star of this era is František Drtikol, a pioneer of nude photography who used shape and shadow in a singular way. -

Postmodernism with its slogan “Anything goes” has relativized many principles of artistic work, recognized on a practically universal scale. Among others also the idea that documentary and stage phography constitute two totally different poles and any arrangementon whatever is just inadmissible in view ol the authenticity and objectivity of the photographic document. -

The short period of liberalization and relative freedom known as “The Prague Spring” came to an abrupt halt with the entry of the tanks of Warsaw Pact countries led by the Soviet Union on 20/21 August 1968. Among the photographs of the events that followed, Josef Koudelka’s pictures of spontaneous protests in Prague against the intervention are especially stirring. (Although they received the Robert Capa Award the following year the photographs were published anonymously until 1984.) Koudelka emigrated in 1970, and was invited to join the prestigious Magnum agency the following year. The dramatic events of the period, including the tense funeral of Jan Palach (a student who in protest to the intervention set himself on fire in January 1969) were also recorded by Miloň Novotný, Miloš Polášek, Jiří Všetečka, Pavel Štecha, Bohumil Dobrovolský, Jindřich Marco, and Dagmar Hochová, as well as Sudek’s former assistant Sonja Bullaty and her husband Angelo Lomeo. -

1.7.-9.10. 2005Uvažujme nejprve trochu o tom, jak delikátní je stav „dějin české fotografie“ nebo se spolu s Josefem Mouchou ptejme přímo „Jak zařídit dějiny fotografie?“ (Ateliér 13/2004, str.2). A to vše v situaci soudobých razantních technologických proměn od klasického fyzikálně chemického záznamu k digitálnímu obrazu, kdy obvyklé tradiční autorské bromostříbrné printy (charakterizující českou fotografii minulého století) budou brzy sběratelskou raritou.
